Gettin’ Ready
It's a beautiful morning. The thermometer said it was 54* when I left the house. I've been hiking for about an hour now, not only to check a trail camera but also to train for an upcoming elk hunt in Colorado. I stuffed a couple of weights and a sleeping bag into my pack to get the weight up over the 35 pound mark. The sleeping bag was to add bulk and to keep things from rattling around. My goal was to get in two or three miles of rough terrain and then get home and get to doing some productive work. As I was going around the rocky edge of a steep bowl and looking down into the hollow below, I thought man, I really just need to sit here a bit. Not because I was tired, but because it was just beautiful! It looked like a great spot to type out a couple of thoughts for my blog this week.
And so here I sit. Not exactly training. On one hand, it's fair to say that I'm not really elk hunting today, so it's ok to stop. On the other hand, training is part of the hunt. What we do today can make a big difference in tomorrow. Training for the hard parts such as backpacking in, packing an elk out, shooting after climbing a mountain, those things take commitment. On the other hand, things like gawking at beautiful views and sitting around campfires will be part of the hunt too. For some that might take practice. Not for me. At least in looking back over the last couple weeks, with youth camp and just sitting around numerous fires with friends, well I'm pretty practiced up on that part of the hunt. I guess I better get to moving, get that heart a pumpin’.
l’m keeping it short this week. Not sure what everyone is up to, but to those of you who are doing more than just dreaming about the future, I tip my hat to you for keeping at it!
After all, tomorrow is coming. Might as well be ready when it gets here.
