Another Summer Day

At our house, around 4:30 AM, the whippoorwill starts his nonstop, overly enthusiastic singing, that same song over and over and over again. He's been up all night, filling his belly with insects, and now he's happy. Oh, he did sing occasionally throughout the night, between snacks of various types of moths, and other flying insects, but usually around 4:30, his belly is full and he likes to let the whole world know that it's been a good night, and so he sings on and on and on. Same song, same verse. About the time the whippoorwill turns in for the day, the rooster starts to crow and whether you're ready or not , a new summer day is here.

I'm a morning person. It's hard for me to sleep in. I've learned that if I don't want to go through life being tired then I need to go to bed early. If not, I'll still wake up early and then I'll struggle all afternoon, feeling tired and sluggish.

Today is one of those  beautiful mornings, the best part of my day. There is way more to be done than can fit into my day. I'm not even sure where to start. That inner drive is there. It feels like I better get started. Put on some shoes and get to work.

But the cool air and the singing birds, a cup of freshly brewed coffee, without the noise of humans, calls me to slow down, to pause. It's time to align. Time to pick and choose. What's God up to in my world? Where do I fit in and what does he want done? Figuring that out isn't easy. But it's a great starting point. Deciding to take the time to figure that out is probably the most important decision of the day.

So now l’m off and running. For me, taking the time to write this little quip is a part of it.

What about you? What are your priorities? It's probably not my business.

But really, for your own sanity, I hope that you take a little time to align too!
